Fuck The Facts / Leng Tch'e: Split
20/02/09 || Kampfar
Leng Tch’e is the name of a Chinese way of torture and translates to “death by a thousand cuts”. I guess that if your victim passes away before you reach them thousand cuts, you fail your torture exam or something. Anyway, the idea is to dope down an individual, cut it, with paper me thinks, a thousand times or more, then wake the sorry fuck up to a brave new world entirely made out of pain. Just imagine having your cock/cunt treated to this method, and of course also your eyes, nipples and asshole. Fucking hell, even Dr. Mengele didn’t showcase this insane amount of perverted creativity.
This band, however, is not Chinese, nor German, but Belgian as Belgian can be. I have no idea what criterias are used to measure Belgianess, but I anyhow bet you agree a band lending their name from a bestial hobby such as Leng Tch’e should be raw and wicked to the max. Well, this lot aren’t quite there. Sure, it would take a dunderhead of galactic proportions to think of them here Belgians as something radio-friendly and commercial – wink, wink all you necroturds – but as far as grind goes this is nonetheless a somewhat soft and woolly affair. It doesn’t have that sharp grind-edge, if you get my drift. Shit, I forgot to inform that this banana-split is made up of two bands often referred to as grind.
I said soft and woolly, or rather wrote, but that’s not because here lacks power and oomph, oh no, it’s simply because this part of the split-in-half won’t treble-rape your ears into tinnitus. The production is rather ace, really, and the effort on behalf of the band ain’t exactly shit either. Woha, the 4 songs included holds more fine riffs than many a band manages to come up with for a whole career, the variation is irreproachable, and they master every gear of their repertoire with ease. So, I can only praise and recommend you their fine take on deathgrind. I promise, provided you have a set of manly speakers and play it at even manlier volumes, this shit will rumble your surroundings.
Fuck The Facts and fuck you too, I have nothing at all to say about this band’s moniker, so I’ll cut the crap and get to the point already.
The vocalist in this Canadian band is a woman, much like Mr. Gossow isn’t, but it’s certainly hard to tell from how the (fine) lady in question uses her pipes. And it’s equally hard, if not even more so, to pinpoint what them here Canucks are up to. We aren’t talking music so complex it’ll burst your brain, aka mathcore on meth, but it’s very evident that Fuck The Facts aren’t at all trying to be pure this or that, be it grind or whatever. Just like Leng Tch’e isn’t.
But the similarities end there, ‘cause where Leng Tch’e‘s effort sounds modern and expensive, perhaps even Pro-Tooled a bit, Fuck The Facts’ part of the deal sounds as if recorded but not much produced. Just enough, some would say, and I kinda agree. It works very well with the slow, sludge-y songs, as in “Like yesterday” and “My failures (just like yesterday)”, but when the going gets tough and the speed immense, well, I think it all turns into a bit of a mish-mash. We are not speaking white-noise, quite far from, so I won’t die of surprise if I meet someone who turns out to think of this chaotic edge as something entirely positive.
All in all a recommendable release this.
7,5 out 10.
